Presentation at CarolinaCon 7

I had a great time presenting at CarolinaCon 7 this year! We had over 200 people at the conference, so it was great getting to give a talk to that many people on what I consider to be a fun topic.

If you are interested in the presentation, you can find the slides here. If you’d like to see the examples, here’s the list:

CarolinaCon 7

It’s that time of year again! Tonight marks the start of CarolinaCon 7. If you’ve never been, it is a great little tech conference put on by nc2600. It’s grown over the years and is now up to around 200 attendees. I’ve been very lucky to be around for the last 3 (including the one this weekend) and have also been extremely lucky to have the honor of giving a talk at each one.

This year I will be giving a talk on Malware Identification and Classification. Specifically, I will be showing how to do this using Yara and Python. Since malware has become a major problem and is exploding in growth, I thought it would be a great topic to talk about. If you’re in the Raleigh area and want to attend, the conference is extremely cheap to get into, and it gives you access to an entire weekend full of over 15 talks, trivia, lock picking, capture the flag, and more! If you don’t get a chance to attend, but are still interested in my talk, I’ll be posting the slides and demo content after I’m done presenting. My talk is at 2pm tomorrow. Also on Sunday Gerry Brunelle will be giving a talk on Malware Analysis, which fits in beautifully with my talk. Between those two talks, you should have a great intro into the world of Malware.

Hope to see you there!

How The Droid Was Rooted

As promised, here is a link to the presentation I gave today at CarolinaCon. If you were at the con and you find your way here, drop me a comment and let me know what you thought.

I had a great time this weekend. I got to see a lot of old friends, make a lot of new friends, and contribute back to the community. Thanks to NC2600 for letting me present and for putting on another great con. See everyone next year!

CarolinaCon 2010 This Weekend!

CarolinaCon starts tomorrow evening. If you happen to be around the Raleigh area, I highly recommend coming and enjoying some of the talks that are lined up. You can’t beat three days of great talks, networking, and rocking out for $20. As I did last year, I’m still tweaking my talk. It’s ready to rock as is, but I tend to fuss over this type of stuff and I want to make sure I include as much information as I can without going over my time slot, and making time for questions during/after the talk.

After my talk is done, I’ll be posting the presentation for anyone to download if they can’t make it. If you do get a chance to go, find me and say hi!

Talking at CarolinaCon

I woke up this morning with an email from the CarolinaCon group letting me know that my talk was officially accepted. I also found out that due to the high volume of quality talks submitted, they’ve decided to extend the con for an extra day. I think it’s great that CarolinaCon is doing so well. It’s a small, but intimate con and a lot of fun. After talking last year, I knew I wanted to take part again.

My talk is going to focus on the Droid, the timeline/process for rooting it, and what we’ve been able to do since. I’m going to try and make it as informative as possible, so hopefully it’ll be an interesting talk for everyone. The schedule isn’t released yet, so I’m not sure when I’m talking, but either way you should definitely register now, and come hang with us!
